Floating Voices

Floating Voices is the new national maritime arts programme from the creative team at Street Art Ink. This programme focuses on the collation of rich narratives held in communities across Ireland who are living near our waterways, to bring people’s attention back to the power and potential of our rivers and waterways.

Floating Voices is made up of three strands.

The first two strands are maritime tours, and an immersive audio-visual trail launching in April 2023. The third strand is our outreach programmes where multidisciplinary artists work with local communities to create and develop meaningful art installations. These installations remain in the local areas.

Waterford

Floating Voices-Audio Visual Trail

Street Art Ink is delighted to launch this strand of Floating Voices, the audio visual strand of our maritime arts programme. This is the first in a series of audio-visual stories focusing on celebrating the River Suir, its heritage and history. Waterford musician Cilian Jacob was commissioned by Street Art Ink in 2023 to write a song about St Johns Pil and this song was launched as part of Street Art Ink’s maritime and art tours on April 25th 2023. Watch out over the coming months as more of these audio visual stories appear across Waterford City.

In 2022, ReThink Ireland, a social enterprise organisation, contacted the Street Art Ink team to commission an artwork launching a national campaign on the importance of social enterprise efforts in the community. Waterford was chosen as the first artwork to launch this campaign. The artist who painted this was ADW (Ireland), installed in July 2022.

In 2022 Street Art Ink worked with local business and wall owner Fitzgerald Power to paint an artwork launching its national Floating Voices program. This artwork highlights the rich heritage of Waterford and its shipbuilding and maritime history. The artist chosen to paint this piece was David Maker (Spain) and this artwork is being installed in tandem with the launch of Street Art Ink’s Maritime guided tours in April 2023.

Cork

In 2022 the Irish Defence Forces contacted Edel and the Street Art Ink team to commission an artwork which highlights their important outreach work with the community. The artist who painted the piece was Garreth Joyce (Ireland) and it incorporates key landmark buildings and people in Cork City. It was installed in March 2023.

Tipperary

In early 2022 Tipperary Council commissioned Street Art Ink to deliver five pieces of large-scale mural art. This project was part of an overall regeneration plan for the town of Thurles. The artists who painted the artworks were Dan Leo (Ireland), ADW (Ireland), James Kirwan (Ireland) and Juliette Viode (France/ Ireland). The theme running through this collection was nature and birds. The five artworks were installed over three months from July to September 2022.

Limerick

The Limerick bridges project started in October/ November 2022 with the painting of Childers Bridge. The artists who collaborated on this artwork were James Kirwan (Ireland) and Lost Optics (Romania). Limerick Council funded this project.

Following on from the success of this artwork Limerick Council commissioned Street Art Ink to paint a second bridge, Pa Healy Bridge. The artists collaborating on this second bridge are Mr Cenz (UK) and Curtis Hylton (UK). This artwork is due to be installed in May 2023.
